Few people will know
or experience the world of hurt that Peace Officer,
Firefighters, Emergency
Services and
Military Personnel face in their day-to-day role of
protecting our society. The sights, sounds and
situations that they face each day on our behalf takes a
toll on their families and themselves. This is why the
Diakonos Retreat Society began in 1997 and continues to
exist today.
The Diakonos Retreat Society is a non profit charitable
organization that serves to strengthen Peace Officers,
Firefighters, Emergency Services and Military
Personnel and their families by building legacies of
hope, mutual respect, trust and longevity to withstand
the challenges of their profession within the
communities they serve in.
Diakonos Retreat Society currently operates 3 “Diakonos”
houses – in the cities of Calgary, Edmonton and Red
Deer. These residential homes are offered in a
confidential manner to all Peace Officers, Firefighters,
Emergency Service and Military Personnel, their spouses
and civilian members of these organizations. These homes
are used for providing refuge during difficult personal
circumstance or until other processes can be put into
place. At times there might be medical situations where
overnight accommodations are
necessary - particularly for those from out of town.
A vision of the Diakonos Retreat Society is to build
community understanding that “Our Community Heroes” need
to be strengthened, acknowledged and appreciated. These
Heroes serve and protect our schools, businesses,
communities and country. It’s not an easy task but as
they do so, we can feel safe and know that should an
emergency arise, Our Community Heroes will be there.
